The Chairperson of the Punjab State Women’s Commission, Ms. Raj Lali Gill, today held an open court (Khulla Darbar) at the Deputy Commissioner’s Office in Sangrur to address the grievances of women. During this public hearing, 25 ongoing cases from Sangrur and Malerkotla districts were reviewed, with an additional 10 new cases registered.

Out of the total 35 cases, 30 were resolved on the spot through mutual consent or legal procedures. While overseeing the hearings, Ms. Gill issued strict instructions to investigating officers to complete inquiries promptly within the legal framework and ensure justice for the affected parties.

Speaking at a press conference, Ms. Gill emphasized that the Commission treats all parties equally, without distinguishing between mothers-in-law and daughters-in-law. “Every decision is made solely on merit,” she stated. She reiterated the Commission’s steadfast commitment to safeguarding women’s rights while urging all parties to remain mindful of their societal responsibilities alongside their rights.

Ms. Gill highlighted that the purpose of organizing such open courts across various districts is to make justice accessible to women without requiring them to travel to the Commission’s headquarters. This approach ensures quicker and more convenient resolution of grievances.

She further noted the vital role women play in society and called on men to acknowledge this truth. “A woman does everything in her power to preserve her family, but this does not mean she should tolerate oppression in silence,” she said.

The Commission not only ensures action against wrongdoers but also strives to find constructive solutions to marital disputes, aiming to prevent cases from escalating to divorce. Ms. Gill encouraged affected women to approach the Commission directly or submit complaints to their district’s women’s cell, with a copy sent to the Commission for swift action.

Appealing to society, she urged, “Do not let minor issues create rifts in relationships. Recognizing the importance of the family unit, we must contribute to building a better society.” The event was attended by SP (H) Mr. Dilpreet Singh, SDM Mr. Charanjot Singh Walia, District Program Officer Ms. Ritender Kaur, and officials from various departments.
