Dr. Inderbir Singh Nijjar, MLA from Amritsar-South and former Minister of the Local Bodies Department, Punjab visited the under-construction Water Treatment Plant at Vallah under the Amritsar Bulk Water Supply Project to review the project’s progress.

During the visit, he inspected the plant and gathered details about its technical aspects of the project. It is noteworthy that the Municipal Corporation is implementing the Punjab Municipal Services Improvement Project with the support of the World Bank and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank.

Under this project, water from the Upper Bari Doab Canal will be treated and supplied to households in the future. The project includes the construction of a state-of-the-art Water Treatment Plant with a capacity of 440 million liters per day, the construction of 45 new water storage tanks, renovation of 24 existing tanks, and the laying of 112 km of pipelines across the city.

On this occasion, Dr. Nijjar also held a meeting with officials of Larsen & Toubro the company executing the project and the Municipal Corporation to review the progress. He stated that this project is crucial to address the rapidly depleting groundwater levels and ensure the supply of clean drinking water to the residents.

“This initiative will reduce our dependence on groundwater and guarantee access to safe drinking water for the people,” he added. Dr. Nijjar further mentioned that the project has been designed considering the city’s needs for the next 30 years, ensuring water supply to an estimated population of 25 lakh by 2055.

Emphasizing the importance of this project, he appealed to residents to cooperate if any construction activity takes place near their homes or shops for project purposes. Meanwhile, Dr. Nijjar also inaugurated a special health check-up camp organized at the plant premises for screening heart and lung diseases.

The camp was led by Dr. Vijay Kotwal (District TB Officer), Dr. Anil (Cardiologist), and Dr. Amit (Medical Officer, Civil Hospital), who conducted health check-ups for workers, employees, and officers working at the plant. They also shared tips for maintaining healthy heart and lungs.

On this occasion, Dr. Nijjar also carried out tree plantation within the plant premises. During this Jitin Vasudev (SE Project), Rahul Patel (Project Manager, Larsen & Toubro), Ashwani Sharma (Senior Construction Manager), Ranjit Singh (SDO), Dr. Monica Sabharwal, Giriraj Singh Hada, Harpreet Singh and others were also present.
