MP Sanjeev Arora has officially resigned from the Rajya Sabha following his recent victory in the Ludhiana West Assembly by-election. Arora personally met the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, Jagdeep Dhankhar, Vice President of India at Vice President's enclave in New Delhi today to hand over his resignation letter. He cited constitutional provisions that prohibit simultaneous membership in both Parliament and a State Legislature after 14 days of Gazette Notification dated which is 24th of June, 2025 regarding election results.
Arora, who served in the Upper House for nearly three years, expressed his deep gratitude to the people of Punjab, fellow Members of Parliament, and the Rajya Sabha Chairman for their support and cooperation throughout his tenure. He acknowledged the valuable experience gained in national legislative processes and lauded the Chairman's guidance and leadership.
“It has been an honour and privilege to serve as a Member of the Rajya Sabha and contribute to the legislative process at the national level,” Arora stated in his resignation letter. He further extended heartfelt thanks to the Chairman, fellow Members, and the people of Punjab for the trust and support they reposed in him.
His resignation marks a significant political shift as he transitions from the national stage to the state legislature. Arora won the Ludhiana West by-election held on June 19 by a margin of 10,637 votes, following the untimely demise of the sitting MLA. His candidature was backed by AAP’s senior leadership, acknowledging the impactful work he had undertaken during his Rajya Sabha tenure.
Arora assumed office in the Rajya Sabha on April 10, 2022. During his term, he maintained an attendance rate of 80%, matching the national average and surpassing the state average of 77%. He participated in 82 debates, exceeding both the national (79.8) and state (44.6) averages, showcasing his active engagement in national discourse.
He also raised 229 questions, well above the national average of 134.22 and the state average of 204, reflecting his proactive approach to addressing public concerns. Additionally, he introduced one Private Member’s Bill, aligning with the national average (0.9), though slightly below the state average (1.9).
Arora’s electoral victory is being seen as a public endorsement of his consistent performance and dedication. Voters in Ludhiana West supported him wholeheartedly, recognising the significant development efforts he has been associated with over the past three years.
Arora got 43.34% more votes than immediate rival Congress Candidate Bharat Bhushan Ashu. Meanwhile, Rajya Sabha Chairman has confirmed the acceptance of the resignation through a post on X (formerly Twitter).
