CGC among top 10 academic institutes in India for patent filings for 7th consecutive year

Chandigarh Group of Colleges (CGC) Landran has reinforced its standing as a frontrunner in innovation and research by featuring in the list of top 10 applicants for Patents from Academic Institutes and Universities, pan India, for the 7th consecutive year, in the Annual Report published by the office of the Controller General of Patents, Designs, Trademarks and Geographical Indicators, Government of India. 

Ranked sixth, CGC has filed 977 patents in the 2023-2024 period and is also among a handful of institutes from Punjab to have regularly made into the list. This milestone underscores the institution’s commitment to contributing richly to Punjab’s growing innovation ecosystem. CGC Landran has also instituted a specialized Research and Development cell, an Incubation centre, the ACIC-RISE association which is backed by the NITI Aayog and an IPR (Intellectual Property Rights) cell to support its innovators and their efforts further.

As per Government data, a total of 92,168 patent applications were filed out of which, the number of applications filed by Indian applicants, showed a 19.1 per cent increase over last year. Punjab figured in the top five filing states and Union Territories with a total of 4,604 patent applications filed. This list includes Tamil Nadu at the top spot followed by Maharashtra, Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh.

CGC Landran’s Mechanical Engineering and Electronics & Communication Engineering departments took the lead in filing the most patents at 135 and 134, respectively, followed by Chandigarh Business School of Administration, with a significant contribution of 225 patents filed. Some of the unique innovations developed by CGC’s inventors include a system for Virtual Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for remote and efficient patient monitoring, filed by Prof. (Dr.) Dinesh Arora; A crop managing system for water conservation in agriculture promoting sustainability and improving food security, by ECE’s Prof. (Dr.) Simarpreet Kaur; An automated tyre health monitoring device for improving vehicle safety and efficiency, by students of Mechanical Engineering; An ocular drug delivery-enabled nanostructured Lipid Carrier based composition for improving drug penetration and efficacy while treating eye diseases, filed by students of Pharmacy department; among a host of others.

Satnam Singh Sandhu, Chairman, CGC Landran and Rashpal Singh Dhaliwal, President, CGC Landran congratulated the CGC family for this achievement. They said that this accomplishment is a testament of our unrelenting efforts in promoting innovation and entrepreneurship.
