The daily burning of electric waste, thermocol, and other hazardous materials by junk dealers on Jhungian Marg has become a serious public health and environmental concern. The toxic fumes and foul odor not only affect local residents but also thousands of daily commuters, including school children, office workers, and college students who use this route regularly.
Health at Risk:
The poisonous smoke is particularly dangerous for patients suffering from respiratory issues, lung diseases, tuberculosis, and eye conditions. However, even healthy individuals are increasingly reporting symptoms such as persistent cough and throat irritation. Children are often seen covering their faces with handkerchiefs to shield themselves from the fumes.
Impact on Environment and Wildlife:
In addition to human health, the constant burning has an adverse effect on the environment. Animals and birds in the surrounding areas are also at risk due to prolonged exposure to the toxic air.
Public Appeal for Action:
Prof. Simranjit Singh Kaler, Chairman of the Serving Earth Society (RASI), expressed deep concern over the situation. He highlighted the importance of addressing such issues under Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 13, which focuses on climate action.
Prof. Kaler urged the administration to take immediate and concrete measures to stop this harmful practice and protect public health. “The administration must step in urgently. This is not just a local nuisance it's a direct threat to human life, biodiversity, and sustainable urban living,” he said.
The residents and environmental groups are calling for strict monitoring, enforcement of anti-burning regulations, and the promotion of eco-friendly waste disposal alternatives.
