The District Administration today organized an awareness programme on the recently enacted criminal laws- Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam. The event aimed to familiarise the officers and officials with the significant provisions and implications of these new legal frameworks.

The programme commenced with a welcome address by the Deputy Commissioner (DC) Pulwama, Dr. Basharat Qayoom, who emphasized the importance of understanding and implementing the new laws effectively.  Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Basharat Qayoom, said, "The introduction of these new criminal laws is a landmark reform aimed at ensuring a more robust, transparent and citizen-friendly justice system. 

It is imperative for all stakeholders to acquaint themselves with these changes to ensure effective implementation and uphold the rule of law in its true spirit." The session featured detailed presentations on the three new laws by the guest speakers, including the Deputy Director of Prosecution and senior prosecuting officers, who thoroughly explained various facets of the newly introduced criminal laws.

The Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Pulwama and SSP Awantipora also addressed the gathering, sharing their insights on the impact of these laws on policing, investigation and justice delivery system. They highlighted the reforms introduced by these legal provisions to enhance the efficiency, transparency and effectiveness of the criminal justice system.

The newly introduced laws prioritize justice over punishment, ensuring that delays in the legal process are minimized through speedy trials and timely justice. These reforms are justice-oriented and victim-centric, with the potential to make the nation’s criminal justice system more modern and significantly improve conviction rates. 

By fostering a more accessible, supportive and efficient justice system, these changes mark a significant step towards empowering citizens. The event saw the participation of the Additional Deputy Commissioners(ADCs) Pulwama, Awantipora and Tral, along with the General Manager of DIC Pulwama, the District Programme Officer of ICDS Pulwama and the Joint Director of Planning Pulwama, Assistant Commissioner Revenue Pulwama ,the Assistant Commissioner Development, Pulwama along with other district officers. Additionally, the Principals of Degree Colleges Pulwama, Tral, Rajpora, Awantipora also attended.

The awareness program set the tone for the district wide campaign on the three new criminal laws, ensuring that stakeholders at all levels remain informed and prepared for their implementation.
