The balancing weight of a gate pillar at Prakasam Barrage in Vijayawada was damaged in the early hours of Monday, leading to a significant emergency response. The damage occurred as floodwaters carried boats downstream, with four becoming stuck at the barrage gates, intensifying the already critical situation. In response, the Water Resources Department lifted all 70 crest gates to manage the massive inflow of water.

As of 7:00 AM on September 2, 2024, the barrage recorded a surplus of 11,33,076 cusecs, marking the second highest flood discharge in 121 years. This level is the highest recorded since the barrage was constructed, replacing the older anicut. The unprecedented water flow has caused widespread flooding, with Bhavani Island and Berm Park now submerged.

Several upstream areas of Prakasam Barrage are also heavily affected. Residents in Ramalingeswaranagar and Yanamalakuduru are grappling with floodwaters that have entered their homes, despite the presence of a retaining wall meant to protect the area. With the second flood warning in force, officials continue to monitor the situation closely, taking measures to mitigate further damage.
