The District Administration and Pulwama Police, in collaboration with the National Youth Peace Foundation, Wednesday organised a mega event to commemorate the ‘International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking’ at the auditorium hall of GDC Boys Pulwama.

Earlier in the day, Deputy Commissioner (DC) Pulwama, Dr. Basharat Qayoom flagged-off a rally from the District Administrative Complex Pulwama, which concluded at the Clock Tower in the main market, Pulwama.

Dr. Basharat Qayoom presiding as the chief guest underscored the vital importance of investing in prevention of drug abuse. He emphasized the need to focus on multiple factors such as awareness, robust enforcement, and teamwork.

He said consistent actions under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act have significantly reduced the area of illicit crop cultivation over the years. Efforts to promote alternative livelihoods and impose strict penalties on offenders have been crucial. Victims have been provided with treatment and rehabilitation to aid their reintegration into society, he added.

The increasing demand for medical advice and drug de-addiction centers signifies a positive shift in societal attitudes. Speakers at the event addressed the drug addiction scenario in the district, highlighting the pivotal role of families, especially mothers and parents in combating drug abuse. Educational institutions were urged to conduct parent-teacher meetings specifically aimed at raising awareness.

Further an appeal was made to religious institutions, preachers and civil society including youth organisations and other NGOs working in this field to join hands in combating Drug menace in the district.

The event featured an oath ceremony and a signature campaign, along with cultural performances such as the Kashmiri Rouf dance, various vibrant cultural programs, nukkad natak, a documentary on drug abuse, skits, poetry, and a rap song on drugs highlighting drug abuse and its negative impact on individuals and society.

Attendees included the Principal of GDC Boys Pulwama, the President of the Traders Federation Pulwama, poets, Imams Jamia Masjid Shareef Pulwama, members of various Auqaf committees, youth participants, and students from various educational institutions across the district. The event concluded with a felicitation ceremony for the participants and a vote of thanks by Senior Superintendent of Police Pulwama, P. D. Nitya.
