In a monumental stride towards agricultural transformation in Anantnag, the District Development Commissioner (DDC) Anantnag, Dr. Syed Fakhrudin Hamid inaugurated the first-ever Medicinal Aromatic Plants Germplasm Bank at Verinag.

Spanning five hectares on land reclaimed through an anti-encroachment drive, the bank, owned by the Department of Agriculture Production and Farmers Welfare aims to address the increasing demand for herbal drugs and cosmetics by facilitating the production and distribution of planting material for Medicinal and Aromatic Plants.

Underlining the initiative's significance, DDC planted the inaugural lavender cuttings, symbolizing the commencement of a project poised to expand cultivation in the region. As many as 20,000 cuttings will be transplanted, marking a pivotal step in harnessing the potential of Anantnag's agro-climatic conditions for Medicinal plant cultivation.

The MAP Germplasm Bank, a pivotal component of the Horticulture and Agro-based Industries Development Programme (HADP), is anticipated to drive substantial growth in the agriculture and allied sectors. This transformative venture aims to elevate the local economy, bolster productivity, and fortify resilience in the existing agricultural system.

The DDC emphasized the role of technology and innovation in ensuring sustained output growth without inflating input costs. He expressed confidence that this initiative will become a cornerstone of the local economy in the years to come.

Discussing the project's broader objectives, Dr. Hamid underscored its commitment to making farming in Anantnag viable, steady, and sustainable. The comprehensive approach includes providing superior inputs, extension support, and ensuring remunerative prices and market support for Medicinal and Aromatic Plant cultivators.

Addressing a substantial gathering of farmers and general public in weekly Block Diwas held at the inauguration, Dr. Hamid reassured that the administration is unwavering in safeguarding farmers' interests, fostering prosperity in farms and homes, and instilling self-respect in the 118,314 farmer families of District Anantnag. This innovative project heralds a promising future for agriculture in the region, aligning with the vision of a developed and prosperous Bharat.
