Launch of "Adopt-a-Spot" Programme to Transform Fatehgarh Sahib into a Clean and Green District

The District Administration, Fatehgarh Sahib along with Department of Rural Development and Panchayats has launched the 'Adopt-a-Spot' programme aimed at transforming the cleanliness and beauty of Fatehgarh Sahib.  The pilot phase of this programme commenced with the adoption of the SH 12A road near Akal Academy, where Mr. Harpinder Singh, the owner of Virsa Dhaba, has pledged to keep the stretch clean and beautiful.On October 1, 2023, the inaugural cleaning activity under the Adopt-a-Spot programme took place with active participation from the community. 

Deputy Commissioner of Fatehgarh Sahib Parneet Shergill, IAS launched the programme. Under her able guidance this programme is led by Hiten Kapila, DDPO and Mayuri Parui, PGGF. At the event, 30 students from Akal Academy with their Principal Sandeep Kaur and 2 faculty members, 25 MGNREGA workers with their GRS Ravinder Singh and Yadvender Singh workers participated in the cleaning activity. Other notable officers who participated were ADC(D) Surinder Singh Dhaliwal, PCS; BDPO Baljit Singh Sohi, Tehsildar Bassi Pathana Avtar Singh Jangu, SDO WSSB Kuljeet Singh, JE WSSB Sachin, BRC WSSB Harmanjeet Kaur, Panchayat Secretary Harpreet Singh, Panchayat Secretary Manmohan Singh, Panchayat Secretary Bahadur Singh, Sarpanch Gram Panchayat Chunni Kalan Harkanwaljeet Singh.

The 'Adopt-a-Spot' programme aims to achieve the following objectives:

Reduce litter and enhance cleanliness in streets and public places in Fatehgarh Sahib district.

Beautify streets and public places by increasing green cover.

Engage local businesses, citizens, and community groups in taking ownership of their neighborhoods.

Promote environmental awareness and sustainable waste management practices.

The programme will be rolled out in phases, starting with a pilot on a small stretch of road near SYL in SH 12A. Subsequent phases will include onboarding individuals, organizations and businesses on various roads leading towards Mandi Gobindgarh, Morinda, and Patiala. Adoptable spots will include roads, roundabouts, bus stops, ponds, schools, local parks, or any other specific spots in cities or villages.

The implementation involves identifying unclean spots during each phase, engaging local individuals and organizations for adoption process, signing MoUs for a two-year commitment, and reporting cleaning and greening activities. District officials will monitor these activities to ensure accountability and success.

Individuals, businesses, and organizations adopting spots will have the opportunity to fulfill their social responsibility, contribute to public welfare, and gain visibility through boards displayed on the adopted spot. These boards will showcase the name of the adopting entity and the period of adoption, along with a positive religious quote of their choice.Following the success of the pilot, the programme will progress through various phases with a strategic onboarding process. 

A dedicated portal will be created for recording adopted spots and publicizing the cleaning and greening activities through social media and official channels.The 'Adopt-a-Spot' programme is a community-driven initiative that empowers individuals and businesses to actively participate in the beautification and cleanliness of Fatehgarh Sahib. All organizations, businesses and individuals of the district are encouraged to participate and adopt a spot in Fatehgarh Sahib.
