Batting for a pollution-free environment in the district, Deputy Commissioner Vishesh Sarangal on Wednesday directed the officials of Municipal Corporation and Municipal Councils to ensure one hundred percent segregation of solid waste at source level so that proper recycling of solid waste could be ensured in the district. 

Chairing a review meeting to discuss the progress of the District Environment Plan held here at the district administrative complex, the deputy commissioner asked the officials that solid waste management can be imagined until waste material is segregated at source level. 

He directed the officials to ensure that the entire solid waste is getting segregated at household level so that its disposal/recycling can be done smoothly. Likewise, he also directed the officials to personally check the functioning of compost pits in the district as these pits may play a crucial role in ensuring disposal of solid waste. 

Mr. Sarangal reviewed the progress of several pro-environmental schemes being implemented in Jalandhar and directed the officials concerned to complete all ongoing projects within a given time-frame. 

He directed the officials to update their environment plan and submit a finalized plan to the administration so that this plan is forward to the National Green Tribunal. 

The DC said that all the directions issued by National Green Tribunal and the state government be implemented in letter and spirit. He took stock of ongoing projects aimed at keeping pollution under check and categorically said that any kind of inordinate delay in the execution of these projects would be dealt with strictly. 

The DC also reviewed solid waste management projects, bio-mining of solid waste, plastic waste management, E-waste management, construction of compost pits, rain water harvesting systems, industrial waste management, construction waste management, sewerage treatment plants, plantation and other projects devised to improve the situation with respect to air and water pollution. 

He also listed the issues pertaining to water treatment and noise pollution and directed all Municipal Councils and Municipal Corporation Jalandhar to ensure proper disposal of solid waste through door to door collection and source segregation. 

Prominent amongst others present in the meeting included Additional Deputy Commissioner Varinderpal Singh Bajwa, Additional Deputy Commissioner Jasbir Singh, Sub Divisional Magistrates Vikas Heera, Balbir Raj Singh, Rishab Bansal, Aman Pal Singh, Executive Engineer Punjab Pollution Control Board Sandeep Kumar, Soil Conservation Officer Lupinder Kumar, and Chief Agriculture Officer Dr. Jaswant Rai.
