Block Development Office Kishtwar in collaboration with Government Degree College Kishtwar   celebrated World Environment Day with the theme 'Beat the Plastic Pollution' under the banner of Mission LiFE "Life Style for Environment". The event commenced with a welcome address by Prof. Sonika Sen (NSS P.O).

The programme was attended by Additional District Development Commissioner (ADDC) Sham Lal ,  BDC Chairman Kishtwar Suresh Sharma, DDC member Kishtwar Zakir Hussain Butt, besides   ACD, Sunil Bhutyal; College Principal, Dr. Jyoti Parihar; Block Development officer Sumeet Singh    District Officer, Pollution Control Committee , Mukesh Singh and  EO, Municipal Council Ninad Sen and PRIs.

The speakers, including BDC Chairman, DDC member, ADDC, ACD,  appealed to the people to utilise these types of platforms for garnering requisite information and taking proactive involvement for the realization of the government's resolve of Swachh Bharat and Swasth Bharat Abhiyan.

The goal of life is living in agreement with nature and being responsive to global indicators, the speakers vehemently highlighted in the event.Besides, the speakers also stressed on the need for the implementation of Plastic Waste Management rules in letter and spirit.

The BDO Kishtwar sensitized the students that the plastic typically used in bottles, bags, and food containers contains chemical additives such as endocrine disruptors, which are associated with negative health effects, including cancers, birth defects, and immune system suppression in humans and wildlife, thus posing a real threat and severe danger across food chains.

Senior faculty members Dr. Tariq Hussain and Prof. M.M. Matto also graced the occasion with their presence. Approximately 100 participants actively took part in the event.

Prof. Faisal Mushtaq and Students from the college, namely Abroo, Vasundhara, Salma, and Easha, delivered impactful speeches on World Environment Day besides encouraged the audience to reduce the use of single-use plastic and promote green initiatives.

Shweta, a student of GDC, recited a powerful poem, and Sahil performed a song to raise awareness.Later, the participants took the 'Life Pledge' to protect the environment.

Jute bags were distributed in exchange for the plastic among the participants on the occasion. The programme ended with the vote of thanks by Lieutenant (Dr.) Madhu Bala (NCC ANO).

Meanwhile, on the direction of the College Principal, the faculty members  Prof. Ajay, Prof. Madhu Ram, Prof. Randeep Kumar, and Prof. Vijay Chauhan, hosted students from Kidzee School and planted various varieties of Trees and plants on the college campus to celebrate World Environment Day 2023.
