Moving forward with the agenda to spread green cover and sustainable development, Local Bodies minister Dr Inderbir Singh Nijjar inaugurated Sidhwan canal waterfront phase-2 and leisure valley established alongside the canal in Atam Nagar constituency on Saturday.
The minister was accompanied by Atam Nagar MLA Kulwant Singh Sidhu, MC Commissioner Dr Shena Aggarwal, zonal commissioner (Zone D) Jasdev Singh Sekhon among others.
The Sidhwan canal waterfront phase-2 has been established alongside the canal starting from Jawaddi canal bridge till Dugri canal bridge, while leisure valley has been established at the similar stretch starting from Dugri canal bridge till Dhuri railway crossing.
Approximately 2.3 kms long stretch alongside the canal has been covered under both these projects and around 25000 shrubs/plants including ornamental plants have been planted in the two green belts.
Minister Dr Nijjar and MLA Sidhu stated that Sidhwan canal waterfront phase-2 is spread in around 32000 sq meter area and has been developed at a cost of Rs 5.06 crore under smart city mission.
A cycle track (1100 meter length) has also been established alongside the waterfront project.Apart from footpaths ane canopies, ample parking spaces have been developed at both the entry points to the green belt.
Similarly, leisure valley has been developed from Dugri canal bridge till dhuri line railway crossing alongside the canal under National Clean Air Program (NCAP) at a cost of Rs 3.14 crore.
The leisure valley has been established in around 9800 sq meter area. Apart from footpaths and canopies, swings have also been installed in the green belt.
Dr Nijjar stated that spreading green cover is among the focus areas of the state government, which has been working for the overall development of the state. He also appealed the public to support the authorities in keeping the green spaces and water bodies including Sidhwan canal clean.
