Today it's a great day for the whole nation, a day to feel proud as it's the 109th birth anniversary of one of India's greatest generals, greatest war hero Sam Manekshaw, India’s first Field Marshal. Referred as the best soldier born on 3 April 1914, he is prominently known as Sam Bahadur. He served in the military for over four decades and participated in five wars. He died at the age of 94 on 27 June 2008.
Sam Manekshaw was born to Parsi parents in Amritsar. The fearless patriot began with service in the British Indian Army in World War II and was commissioned into the 4/12 Frontier Force Regiment. During his military career of 40 years he fought five wars including World War II, the India-Pakistan war of 1947, the Sino-Indian war of 1962, the India-Pakistan war of 1965, and the Bangladesh Liberation War of 1971.
Sam was appointed the eighth chief of the Indian Army in 1969 and served on the post till 1973, retired in January 1973. Manekshaw dedicated his life to the army and when he was asked by former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi about the India-Pakistan war in 1971 which led to the creation of Bangladesh, he fearlessly replied, "I am always ready, sweetie."
Manekshaw was honoured with the nation's highest civilian awards of Padma Bhushan in 1968, and then with Padma Vibhushan in 1972 for his commendable service to the nation.
On the 109th birth anniversary of the great leader, the Indian Army tweeted, “#IndianArmy pays tribute to Field Marshal SHFJ Manekshaw, MC, on his 109th #BirthAnniversary. The charismatic & inspiring leader led the #IndianArmy as #COAS, to one of the most decisive victories in World History. #IndianArmy”
Bollywood actor Vicky Kaushal is soon coming up with a film titled ‘Sam Bahadur’ based on the life of the hero. Vicky will be portraying the title role of Sam Manekshaw The film also stars Sanya Malhotra playing the role of Silloo, Manekshaw’s wife and Fatima Sana Sheikh will be seen as Former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. The film directed by Meghna Gulzar whereas penned by Bhavani Iyer with Meghna’s father Gulzar and Shantanu Srivastavan is slated to release in theatres on 1 December 2023.
