It has been recently reported that an earthquake of 7.1 magnitude has hit the Kermadec Islands region located to the north of New Zealand on Thursday morning. As per the statement by US Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake is estimated at a depth of 10 km (6.21 miles).

It was also reported that Tsunami waves are possible for the coasts located within 300 kms of epicentre due to which tsunami alerts were issued by the US Tsunami Warning System according to a separate statement from the agency.
