In a state wide check for quality fruits and vegetables, the teams of Mandi Officers checked 60 fruit and vegetable markets of the State. Nearly 75 quintals of rotten fruits and vegetables, unfit for human consumption were found  and destroyed on the spot, informed KS Pannu, Director, Tandrust Punjab Mission. As anticipated, no case of artificial ripening of fruits was found in any of the mandis but despite continuous checking and warnings, the sale/purchase of rotten fruits and vegetables has been detected in certain mandis. Sale of sub standard fruits and vegetables defeats the purpose of the Tandrust Punjab Mission, said Pannu and added that a directive has been issued to all the Mandi Officers to ensure that the Mandi Supervisors deputed in all the mandis across the state must ensure the quality of the fruits and vegetables sold in the mandis. So far, the Supervisors record the auctions, collect market fees, provide J-forms, ensure proper weighing, look into provision of plinths and other routine jobs but from henceforth, “all the Mandi Supervisors will ensure Quality of the fruits and vegetables besides the regular Mandi Operations”, vociferously asserted Pannu.During the state wide raids, Mr. Pannu informed that mainly the stock in Samana, Sirhind , Ludhiana , Kotkapura, Muktsar, Gurdaspur and Patti mandis was overripe and not  fit for human consumption.
