Power and Irrigation Minister Rana Gurjeet Singh extended gratitude towards Chief Minister Punjab Capt. Amarinder Singh and Finance Minister, Punjab Mr. Manpreet Singh Badal for making special provisions for Power and Irrigation sectors in the annual budget for 2017- 18, which was presented today in Punjab Assembly. He hailed the Punjab Annual Budget 2017-18 as progressive and people friendly budget.In a statement issued here, Rana Gurjeet Singh said that the budgetary allocation of Rs. 3156.69 crore has been earmarked in the Punjab Annual Budget for Power sector. He said that Punjab is a Power surplus state serving more than 89 lakh consumers, with installed capacity of 13960 MW and energy consumption of 41329 MUs per year and this welcome step would go a long way in strengthening the power generation, transmission and distribution network in the state to ensure uninterrupted power supply to the people of the state. He also thanked Chief Minister for announcing a freeze on power tariff for new and existing industries at Rs 5 per unit besides continuing the free power to farmers. Rana Gurjeet Singh also thanked Chief Minister and Finance Minister for the stress laid on the rejuvenation and revamping of canal network in the state. He said that with the completion of composite project of Rs 4128.43 crore for Extension, Renovation & Modernisation of canal system in the State which has been submitted to CWC & JICA for approval and release of funds, majority of irrigation needs of the state would met. He said that Punjab government would focus on rejuvenation, upgradation, reconstruction of main branches of various water courses in the state besides addressing water logging and flood problems. He said that Punjab Government has also proposed to generate economic activity along the rivers and construct a high speed economic corridor on their banks by canalisation of the three major rivers of the State.
