Ummat-e-Islami chairman and Mirwaiz South Kashmir Qazi Yasir on Saturday was detained along with nearly a dozen of his supporters as police foiled their attempt to sit on a token hunger strike here to demand the immediate release of "political prisoners".Eyewitnesses told CNS that a number of separatist leaders and activists assembled here in Press Enclave Srinagar to observe a token hunger strike against the continuous detention of youth and political workers arrested during the unrest last year. Police swung into action and didn’t allow the protesters to occupy any space in the Press Enclave.Witnesses added that as soon as Qazi Yasir reached on the spot, police arrested him. Police also detained other protesters and lodged them at Police Station Kothibagh.A spokesman of Ummat-e-Islami said the group had planned the hunger strike to draw attention towards the plight of political prisoners languishing in various jails in the state. The condition of prisoners is miserable and many of them need immediate medical attention," he said and demanded immediate release of all "political prisoners".
