Dismissing the development as insignificant, the Punjab Congress on Saturday said singer Hans Raj Hans’ decision to quit the Congress in favour of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ahead of the Punjab assembly polls smacked of opportunism. In a statement issued here, party leaders Dr. Raj Kumar Verma, Gejja Ram Valmiki and Advocate Rajnish Sahota said the singer appeared to have abandoned the Valmiki community and cause in order to climb the Hindutva bandwagon. It was evident, they said, that the move was motivated not by any principles but by an opportunistic desire for personal gains. What else could explain the decision of Hans to let go of the Congress, which had showered him with so much love and respect, and move to a party known for its anti-people policies and philosophy, said the party leaders. They pointed out that despite the fact that he came from the Akali Dal, Punjab Congress president Captain Amarinder Singh had gone so far as to recommend a Rajya Sabha seat for Hans – a sign of the reverence the singer received in the Congress. They made it clear that the development would have no impact on the Congress in Punjab as the singer only had a minor role to play in the party’s electoral game plan. They said Hans had lost all his credibility by jumping from the Shiromani  Akali Dal to the Congress and now to the BJP in such a short span of time.
