The reckless disregard of norms with which the Badal government is announcing unexecutionable schemes and sops for the people, and the shameful lack of propriety with which it is launching personal attacks on the state Congress president, reflects its frustration and helplessness in the face of inevitable defeat in the upcoming Assembly elections. This reaction from the Punjab Congress followed a series of announcements and launch of several new so-called welfare schemes by the Badal government over the past few days, and the totally personal and unwarranted attack by the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) on Captain Amarinder Singh. In a statement issued here on Saturday, Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) leaders Kewal Singh Dhillon, Gurpreet Singh Kangar and Kushaldeep Singh Dhillon said the SAD government, out of sheer desperation and frustration, seemed to have thrown all norms to the wind in announcing all kinds of sops and measures to woo the voters of the state.

The SAD leadership was virtually going berserk trying to capture the attention of all sections of the Punjab electorate, said the PPCC leaders, adding that in their hurry to launch new schemes and make all kinds of announcements ahead of the imposition of the code of conduct, they were not even bothered about the feasibility of the execution of these measures. It was evident, however, that the Akalis were fully aware that they could not befool the voters with their hasty announcements and impractical schemes, which probably explained their cheap character assassination efforts against the Punjab Congress president, said the PPCC leaders. The personal attacks on Captain Amarinder clearly indicated that the Badal-led Akalis were feeling helpless against the wave of popularity in favour of the PPCC president and were resorting to desperate measures to fight back, said the Punjab Congress leaders, adding that the people of the state, who had lived through 10 years of SAD misrule and terror, would not be taken by such gimmickry. The PPCC leaders reiterated their demand for the Election Commission to impose the Code of Conduct without further delay to prevent the state government from continuing to misuse its official authority and machinery to promote the vested Akali interests ahead of the assembly polls.
