Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitely on Friday advised police officers to be impartial, humane and efficient. He said at the passing out parade of the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy (SVPNPA) here that to uphold ethics and morality and follow the straight path when they find themselves at crossroads of life.Jaitely was speaking after taking salute at 68th Dikshant Parade at SVP National Police Academy.A total of 109 Indian Police Service (IPS) probationers, including 26 women, beside 15 foreign officers passed out of the academy after completing the basic training of 45 weeks.Among the 15 foreign officers, six are from Royal Bhutan Police, five from Nepal Police and four from Maldives."Remember a police officer owes his commitment to law and law alone. He will be judged by his impartiality, he will be judged by his humanitarian behavior and he will be judged by his efficiency," he said.

Jaitely said those who go astray can suffer from arrogance of office and can even become indifferent to requirements of the society but hoped that these cases will be rare and almost negligible"Those who get committed to their service become more and more humble as each day passes by. Humility, compassion, concern and commitment all become important aspects of their personality."Pointing out that nature of crime is changing as it is no longer merely conventional crime, the minister said terrorism is a great curse on society "You have to deploy all modern tools in order to learn how to fight terror. Cyber crimes, crimes involving detailed forensic analysis, narcotics and newer areas of emerging crime. These are all areas you have to educate yourself while being on the job each and I am sure each one of you continue train yourself every day,a he said.Jaitely told the trainees that there will be many opportunities and occasions in their service where they will find themselves standing at crossroads of life.

"Remember basic principle of life when you are in doubt go straight you are least likely to err in such situations. if you cut corners and choose an easier course it may bring you some momentary advantage but certainly not the long term one."He also advised the probationers that whenever they find themselves involved in internal struggle, always decide in a manner where ethics and morality are on their side. The annual passing out parade is held every year on October 31, the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, India's first Home Minister. However, the event was advanced in view of Diwali.

Jaitely paid rich tributes to Patel and described him as one of the greatest citizens the country has produced."Unquestionably Sardar Patel had one of the greatest role in formation of this country. But for Sardar India's geography would not have been what it is today," he said. The Finance Minister said Patel lived only two-and-half years after Independence but within short span, he united many different provinces and kingdoms to create one of the greatest nations in mankind.

"He used the force of patriotism and most people decided to join out of that spirit. Those who didn't agree he used every tactic in governance available to him," Jaitely added.SVPNPA Director Aruna Bahuguna told the trainee officers that they are venturing into professional life when mankind is facing may crises, foremost among these global terror."Terror across boundaries has drastically proliferated from organised non-state actors to individual radicalisation," she said.Aruna said the offers were equipped not just to win battle on the ground against terror but also the battle of the mind Stating that the year witnessed several new movements posing great challenges to law and order machinery, she advised to go beyond just mechanical regulation understand ideas, stimuli and machinations that propelled these movements.
