CPI (M) state secretary and legislator from Kulgam M Y Tarigami has criticised the BJP-led government at the centre for keeping silence on the ongoing unrest in Kashmir.“The political leadership in Delhi is silent. Prime Minister speaks on all issues. He has sat silently through it all. He has not said a word in the House or outside even though Kashmir is burning. This attitude has been very disappointing and hardens positions in Kashmir, makes it all more difficult and closes windows,” Tarigami told KNS.“Civilian killings have taken place and thousands are injured, all hospitals are full of the injured, but not a word that can mean anything,” he said.He said that the country‘s leadership should start a serious dialogue with Pakistan all stakeholders in Kashmir to resolve the issue.“Instead of talking too much against each other (India and Pakistan), there is need for a serious dialogue. All these accusations by both do not help in Kashmir,” he said.“And then the government of India here has to talk to all stakeholders in Kashmir.

We must draw lessons for the good of the people of India, for the good of the people of Kashmir. We must not shut our eyes to emerging realities, as former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee said, ‘we should not follow beaten tracks’,” he added. On the present unrest, the senior leader said that it is a very serious situation.“The present unrest is much deeper and much wider than anything we have seen for decades. It is mass uprising, there is no village, no mohalla left now that is not involved in the protests today. Primarily the younger generation is in the front row, but the elders too are equally concerned, and involved. A large number of women are coming out and driving the protests,” he said.He questioned as to what government of India has done for Kashmir. “It has relied on the excessive use of force, relied more and more on fraudulent exercises, disruptive initiatives; it has failed to understand the peoples desperation, recognise their concerns,” he said.He added some message of hope needs to be sent to the people. “Don’t add to their hopelessness. That will be detrimental to the interests of all, Kashmiris who are suffering,” he added. (KNS)
