Children in Sharjah are being encouraged to develop their communications skills through a course offered by The General Department of Children Centres in Sharjah, one of the Departments under the umbrella of The Supreme Council for Family Affairs. The program, called The Empowered Speaker is being offered as part of the upcoming Sharjah Children Council (SCC) and will provide 14children between the ages of 6-12  the opportunity to improve their public speaking skills during a 5-day intensive course. As a Leadership Development Program in Public Speaking and Communication, the course will offer participants an appreciation of the importance of effective communication, as well as the ability to handle surprising or difficult situations gracefully, diplomatically, and with extreme confidence.

Those chosen to join the class will be given the tools to present ideas in an effective and professional manner and by the end of the program will be able to develop their own plan of action needed to build their interpersonal, communication, presentation and public speaking skills.Manager of the General Department of Children Centres in Sharjah, Reem BinKaram said, “The General Department of Children Centres team is thrilled to present a new campaign for the empowerment of our nation’s talented youth. We would like to thank HH Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, wife of His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah and Chairperson of the Supreme Council for Family Affairs, for her contribution to this worthy cause. It is due to our Emirate’s leadership and support that we are able to enrich and encourage the children of Sharjah to pursue their dreams.”

During the course seven topics will be covered in different sessions including Internal Preparedness, How to say it, Body Language, Vocal Variety, Best Practices, Impromptu Speeches and Final Practice. The format will include coaching sessions and workshops. The ‘Internal Preparedness’ session will address any internal barriers a speaker may face when presenting or speaking in front of an audience.  In the ‘How To Say It’ session, students discover that speech and presentation quality depends both on the words you use and how you put them together. The ‘Best Body Language for Public Speaking’ lesson will utilize a prepared speech, to focus solely on physical movement and stance for best information delivery, as will the auditory ‘Vocal Variety’ session. Participants will be trained on tone variation, the power of silence, the role of posture and breathing, and how to be clearly expressive. ‘Best Practices in Public Speaking’ will address best methodologies and the ‘Impromptu Speeches’ session will cover improvising strategies and techniques to speak skillfully on the spot, without any forethought or preparation. By the end of the course candidates can compete for the Best Speaker prize. Organized by The General Department of Children Centres, the 2015 edition of the Sharjah Children Council will be held on October 28. The ‘Empowered Speaker’ program aims to bring awareness to the annual event, while empowering children to invest their leisure time developing their skills.

About the Sharjah Children’s Centres

The Children's Centres, in their current status, are the fruits of Sharjah’s experience in developing the skills of Arab children in various aspects, under the generous patronage of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, who himself is a pioneering thought leader. The Children’s Centres are also given special attention and enjoy a close follow-up by HH Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, wife of His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah and Chairperson of the Supreme Council for Family Affairs. This  Centres’ vision is derived from the deep belief of His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah in the importance of nurturing, rising up and thoroughly preparing the children in order to realize the nation’s desired hopes and enable the UAE to catch up with the scientific progress and civilization experienced by the modern world at the present time. The first models of Children's Centres were established in Sharjah in 1985. Starting out with only a limited number of centres, the initiative has greatly developed over the time in quantity and quality, bringing about the 14 centres in existence today. The Centres are spread across the Emirate of Sharjah and offer a diverse range of activities to suit children’s different interests.
