Srinagar , 25 May 2015

Four people, including three soldiers, were killed in a gunfight between security forces and infiltrators on Monday along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir's Kupwara district, officials said."The army has foiled an infiltration bid by militants in Tangdhar sector of the LoC in Kupwara district. Three soldiers and a militant have been killed and a junior commissioned officer (JCO) injured so far in the operation against a group of infiltrators so far," a senior police officer told IANS here. The gunfight was continuing late in the evening, the officer said.

According to the officer, a group of four to seven infiltrators had probably sneaked into this side on Sunday night near Darshan Post along the LoC opposite to Pakistan's Chhajula Post."The group of infiltrators after being challenged opened indiscriminate fire with sophisticated weapons. The fire was retaliated by the army triggering a fierce gunfight. In the initial gunfight, four soldiers, including Subedar B.B. Thapa, sustained serious bullet injuries," he said, adding that three soldiers succumbed to their injuries. One infiltrator also got killed during the gunfight, he added."The exchange of fire is still on in the area (as of 8 p.m.) and the army has cordoned off the surrounding forest area there," said the officer.
