Sukhpal Singh Khaira Official Spokesperson and Ex-MLA Punjab presided over and innaugrated the 18th Rev. Dr. Samuel Slater Inter School English Debates 2013, today at Bishop Cotton School, Shimla .Khaira an old Cottonian himself returned to his alumni school 34 years later, to be Chief Guest, inaugurate and preside over the 18th Inter School English Debate at Shimla today.At the outset a group photo of the Chief Guest, Headmaster Mr. Roy Christopher Robinson, staff and participants of all schools was organized. Prestigious schools such as La Martiniere Kolkata boys and girls, Dubai Modern High School, Lawrence School Sanawar, Vasant Valley schools, Mayo College for girls Ajmer and ofcourse Bishop Cotton School participated in this high profile debate, which is to continue till 27th April.Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Khaira went down the memory lane and recounted the glorious old days at school and thanked his old school for whatever achievements he has made in politics today, he said BCS had inculcated in him a strong belief in principles, fight against injustice of any kind and secularism.
He exhorted students to use education and knowledge as a weapon to make a name for themselves besides contributing to humanity. He applauded BCS for producing good human beings with high moral standards and ethics, its curriculum he said was not merely academics or sports but all around character building.On his part he announced a contribution of Rs. 51,000 to his alumni school and in lighter vein, he said, that this all he could manage being a humble agriculturist, unlike his political foe Sh. Sukhbir Badal Dy. CM who had created a controversy by donating Rs. 1 crore of Punjab govt. money to his alumni school of Sanawar recently.Later the Headmaster, staff and students honoured Mr. and Mrs. Khaira with trophies and gifts. The Headmaster lauded the role of Mr. Khaira in politics particularly his qualities of being articulate, fearlessness and boldness. These he said Mr. Khaira had picked up from Bishop Cotton School. It is noteworthy to mention that Mehtab Singh Khaira son of Mr. Khaira now Youth Congress Assembly President of Bholath Punjab, had also passed out from BCS in the year 2007.
