Need Of Strenuous Efforts To Combat Climate Change : Kulwant Singh

The Deputy Commissioner Kulwant Singh on Tuesday said that there is an urgent need to make strenuous efforts to combat climate change for saving the earth from adverse impacts of global warming and to ensure clean-green environment. The deputy commissioner was speaking after inaugurating a district-level training program on ‘Climate Change Adaptation’ organized by Punjab State Council for Science and Technology and Mahatma Gandhi State Institute of Public Administration (MGSIPA) with Technical support from German agency for International Cooperation at MGSIPA regional centre, Kapurthala road. Addressing the gathering, he said that each citizen must take a keen interest in saving the environment from climate change otherwise we will be cursed by the future generations for not leaving any natural resources including water, trees, rivers, forests, glaciers, and others for them. Mr. Singh said that the global warming has been badly affecting the earth and it is getting warmer day by day and if we will continue to adopt a casual approach towards the environment, the day is not far away when the temperature will cross 60C in the coming years and 

Mr. Singh said that our country is heavily dependent on the climate-sensitive sectors namely agriculture, forest, water, animal husbandry and 60 percent of the population is directly thriving on the agriculture and forest. He said that tree plantation by each resident would help to reduce greenhouse gases and mitigate the negative effect of climate change. The deputy commissioner envisioned that besides checking environmental pollution, the trees would also help in improving groundwater recharge thereby ensuring sustained development of the state.He told the people have to stop the wastage of water and ensure the recharging of water bodies besides optimum utilization of rainwater should be the personal agenda of each citizen.Earlier, the deputy commissioner was welcomed by MGSIPA Regional director Mr. SP Joshi and Ms. Ishupinder Kaur state project director of the German Agency for International Cooperation in the centre. The officials of agriculture, soil conservation, rural development, horticulture, irrigation, forest, and dairy development, animal husbandry departments from Jalandhar, Kapurthala, Hoshiarpur, and SBS Nagar districts participated in the training program.
