Family of a youth who on Tuesday succumbed to injuries sustained in firing by BSF a fortnight ago at Nadihal has blamed SMHS hospital authorities for medical negligence. The youth Ubaid Manzoor Lone, a class 11th student, of Nadihal, Baramulla, succumbed at SKIMS Soura where he was referred to from SMHS hospital after his condition deteriorated there.According to family, Ubaid suffered injury in firing by BSF’s 149 battalion on a group of students at Nadihal area of the Baramulla district on June 25. He was immediately shifted to district hospital Baramulla from where he was referred to SMHS Srinagar for further treatment.“At SMHS hospital, the doctors were not available and after three hours when the blood was continuously oozing from the blood vessels, the junior resident doctors referred him to the cardiovascular surgical department at Bones and Joint Hospital Barzulla,” Nadeem Manzoor, elder brother of slain told GNS.At Barzulla hospital, Nadeem said, the doctors who operated upon him were also “juniors” and could not find out the vessel through which the blood was continuously oozing.“Later, after more than an hour, the doctors at Barzulla again referred him to SMHS. One of the friends accompanying the injured Ubaid told us that blood is not stopping.

Later late in the night, the doctors referred the injured to SKIMS Soura,” he added. He added, “On June 26 afternoon, the doctors at SKIMS referred my brother to SMHS hospital where we had an altercation with doctors after they again referred the injured to SKIMS Soura where he was put on the ventilator after conducting surgery.”“The process of shifting the injured from one place to another lead to the death of my younger brother and he passed away today in the wee hours,” Nadeem said.Nadeem and his family along with the residents of the Nadhial urged the government to take serious note of the “medical negligence.”“Had the doctors at SMHS taken the interest, my brother would have survived as he was talking and was conscious till the morning of June26. This is clearly a gross medical negligence as he lost consciousness on the evening of June 26 after continuous blood loss,” he said.Meanwhile, strongly condemning the “ill approach” by doctors at SMHS hospital, SHRC activist and chairman of the International Forum for Justice, Mohammad Ahsan Untoo said “the injured Ubaid was stable at the hospital and later succumbed due to continuously bleeding which is shameful on part of doctors who could not save this precious life”.

Untoo told GNS that he had already filed a petition on July 3 under SHRC with regard to the negligence of doctors that ultimately resulted in the death of the student. He held the Medical Superintendent of the hospital and Principal GMC responsible for the youth’s death. He added that SSP Baramulla and DC Baramulla have to file the report before the SHRC as to how the BSF troopers opened fire on students. He said the forces are violating the SOP in every nook and corner of the state.A senior doctor wishing not to be named told GNS that senior doctors are not available at SMHS hospital during the night.“Such patients can be handled by the senior doctors who unfortunately are not been present after 4 pm due to private practices,” he said.“Lack of trauma care facilities in peripheries is also costing lives of such trauma patients,” the doctor said, adding, “Such patients should have been treated under one roof and should not be shifted from one place to another.” (GNS)
