Amid shutdown, Govt restrictions paralyse normal life in Valley

Normal life remained paralysed in Kashmir on Monday due to a shutdown call and Eidgah march issued to commemorate the anniversaries of Molvi Farooq, Gani Lone and Hawal massacre victims by Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL).In many parts of Valley especially commercial establishments and educational institutions remained closed, while public transport was on the roads.In Srinagar old city areas were kept out of bounds for people with Eidgah and adjacent areas completely remained sealed off. Authorities placed barricades, while vehicular movement was also disallowed on the roads passing through Eidgah area.Residents of old city said lanes and bylanes were sealed with concertina wires with people only allowed to move after thorough frisking to foil Eidah march.Restrictions were imposed in Nowhatta, Khanyar, Rainawari, M.R.Gunj and Safa Kadal in the old city, while partial restrictions were put in place in Maisuma and Kralkhud in the uptown areas.Contingents of police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) in full riot gear were deployed to maintain law and order and enforce the restrictions

Exams scheduled today were postponed by the University of Kashmir and the Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST).However Train services across Kashmir was also suspended. “We have again suspended train service in the Kashmir valley following a fresh directive from police,” a senior railway official said.The official added that all trains between Budgam-Srinagar-Islamabad-Qazigund in south Kashmir and Banihal in Jammu region remained suspended.Farooq was killed in 1990, while Lone was killed during the commemoration of his anniversary in 2002. In 1990, over 60 people were killed in Hawal area of Srinagar, when government forces opened fire on mourners carrying the body of Farooq. (PTK)
