Ten Indian soldiers killed, four missing after avalanches hit army posts in Gurez

Police on Thursday said that bodies of ten soldiers have been recovered from Gurez where an avalanche had hit the army posts and patrols.SP Bandipora Zulfikar Azad confirmed that ten bodies have so far been recovered.He said one soldier was rescued alive while four others are still missing.Earlier, Army said that two avalanches hit army posts and patrols in Gurez sector of north Kashmir on Jan 25 and 26.In a statement, army said that a Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) and six soldiers were rescued after the avalanches hit their posts.“An avalanche struck an army camp in Gurez Sector of J&K on 25 January 2017. Rescue operations were immediately launched in extreme bad weather and heavy snow fall. The search operation enabled rescue of one JCO and six soldiers while bodies of three soldiers could only be retrieved today morning,” said the statement.It added that an army patrol moving towards a post went missing after an avalanche hit the same area yesterday.“In another avalanche in the same area yesterday, one Army patrol moving towards the post went missing. The area continues to receive heavy snow fall. Braving inhospitable weather conditions, coordinated rescue operations are in progress in which three bodies could be recovered so far. Search operations continue.”  (CNS)
