For his contribution towards Punjabi language and culture, the Punjab Government’s Language Department today presented “Shiromani Punjabi Kavi” award to Prof Gurbhajan Singh Gill at an impressive function held at Punjabi University, Patiala. Cabinet Minister Mr Surjit Singh Rakhra was the chief guest on the occasion while Dr Jaspal Singh, vice chancellor, Punjabi University Patiala was the guest of honour on the occasion.While thanking the state Language department, Prof Gurbhajan Singh Gill said that he has always worked whole heartedly for the promotion of Punjabi language, culture and values and would continue to do so in years to come. Basically hailing from village Basantkot in Gurdaspur district, Prof Gill retired as Editor (Punjabi) from Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana in the year 2013.

It is pertinent to mention here that the Punjabi University, Patiala has recently awarded fellowship for a period of three years to Prof Gurbhajan Singh Gill. This fellowship has been awarded for a project named "Kheti-Bari Lok Dhara", which is related to agriculture folklore.Prof Gurbhajan Singh Gill has served the Punjab Agricultural University Ludhiana for more than three decades and is also the former president of Punjabi Sahit Akademi Ludhiana. Prof Gill was recently awarded fellowship by Punjabi Sahit Akademi, Ludhiana as well.Apart from several national and international awards, Prof Gurbhajan Singh Gill has 16 books on Punjabi poetry to his credit, which includes Gulnaar, Sheesha Jhooth Bolda Hai, Har Dhukhda Pind Mera Hai, Bol Mitti Daya Baweya, Agan Katha, Khair Panja Paaniya Di, Dharti Naad, Phullan Di Jhanjhar, Paardarshi, Mor Pankh, Mann Tandoor, Camera Di Akh Boldi, Surkh Samundar, Do Harf Raseedi, Mann De Boohe Baariya and Tareya Nal Galla Kardeya.
