Srinagar , 16 Dec 2013

Jammu and Kashmir is now among a few states of India to have an Institute of Mathematics, Sciences, a unique research institute of its kind in North India. The present government has played a vital role in carving this prestigious institute at Srinagar with Sub Office at Jammu. Taking personal interests the Chief Minister Mr. Omar Abdullah himself inaugurated the institute in presence of the Higher Education Minister Mr. Mohammad Akbar Lone in the Amar Singh College Campus Srinagar in June 2013.The institute is presently functioning in the Amar Singh College Campus and the process of acquiring land for its infrastructure of international standards at Khember, Srinagar is under process. This institute is being established as an autonomous institution of deemed university status for which the paper work has already been initiated and Rs. one crore sanctioned by the Higher Education Department as seed money to kick start.

The main purpose of the establishment is to develop a mathematics culture in the state and make it a research institute of international standards which shall provide a platform to talented scholars within and outside state. This institute proposes to start integrated Masters Programme in mathematics after +2 level on Chennai Math Institute (CMI) pattern, besides offering research programme in mathematical sciences JKIMS will facilitate the visits of eminent mathematicians and theoretical scientists from within and outside country to provide an opportunity to the students, teachers and scholars to interact and have a formal understanding of the subject, besides workshops, seminars, conferences. JKIMS is launching different programmes for the students at school and college level.

The institute jointly with Department of Mathematics, NIT Srinagar started its activities by an interactive session of teachers and scholars on Analysis and Applications with Prof. S. Ponusamy, Head, ISI Chennai and the Ramanujan Mathematics Newsletter. It organized a Mathematics Fest at Jammu on December 13, 2013 inaugurated by Higher Education Minister Mr. Mohammad Akbar Lone and attended by Secretary Education Sheikh Mushtaq Ahmad, Director College, College Principals, Mathematics teachers of universities and colleges of Jammu province, besides the students and scholars conducted a State Level Talent Hunt Test in Mathematics on December 15, for which almost 600 students were registered. Total number of students, who attended the test at Srinagar were 185, whereas 286 students appeared at Sub Office Jammu. The aim of such an activity is to provide guidelines and make understand our young generation, the way they need to study and solve problems in mathematics. This would of course also provide first hand information to the concerned quarter about the talent available in the state, to be nurtured. This would in the long run enable them to connect the rather abstract manipulations of formal mathematics with their innate intuition on some basic concepts in mathematics.
