Sustainability of declaration of smoke free public places was discussed at a District Monitoring Committee meeting held here today under the Chairmanship of Deputy Commissioner, Baramulla. Deputy Commissioner sought various suggestions from the participants for making the step effective and ensures its impact for the days to come so that the active smokers are discouraged to continue the bad habit of smoking and save the passive smokers from the dreadful effect of the polluted environment.Executive Director JK Voluntary Health Association (JKVHA) on this occasion gave resume of the efforts being put in by JKVHA and Voluntary Health Association of India in enforcing the Tobacco Control laws as per the provisions of Cigarette and Other Products Act (COTPA)-2003. He said that the State has shown excellent results and taken massive strides through pisional and district administration to combat the menace of tobacco consumption in the State.Ban on Gutka, VAT increase on tobacco products and declaration of four district smoke free public places including educational institutions and hospitals as Tobacco free are a few milestones registered by the Association during very shortest possible time.The Deputy Commissioner said that all officers Incharge of the public places under their control should discourage the consumption of cigarettes and other products of tobacco and ensure display of signage as per specification of Tobacco Control Act.
