Amid clashes and protests Sopore town observed a complete shutdown for the consecutive second day on Tuesday against the mysterious killings from past few days. All the shops, business establishments and educational institutes remained shut while transport was off the road. Heavy contingent of police and CRPF personnel were deployed in restive parts of the town to foil possible protests. Army was seen on the roads at different places in the town. Police had created several check points and naakas and suspects were frisked and questioned thoroughly.
Sources informed CNS that Army personnel from 22 RR along with SOG Sopore and CRPF cordoned off Noorbagh area late Monday night after they received inputs about the presence of militants in the area. The night long search operation was called off on Tuesday afternoon. Witnesses said that nobody was arrested during the operation. “Sopore presents a grim look. Roads are deserted and people are scary. The town has been virtually handed over to Indian Army. Everywhere men in uniform are patrolling the streets,” said a resident of Main Chowk Sopore. He added that majority of the people who were affiliated with one or the other militant organizations in past have fled from the town.Reports said that scores of youth clashed with police near police station Sopore. Agitated youth who were protesting against the mysterious killings resorted to stone-pelting while police used tear-smoke shells to disperse them.
