A day after violence erupted following the death of a teenager in police firing, the situation in the Kashmir Valley on Sunday remained tense but peaceful."The overall law and order situation remained peaceful in the Valley today (Sunday)," a senior police officer told IANS here.Heavy downpour, which started during the night, continued throughout the day across the Valley on Sunday putting a dampener on public display of resentment as also the timely arrest of the two local policemen who reportedly fired at the mob.Not many people were seen on the city roads here as they chose to remain indoors because of inclement weather.Traffic on the Srinagar-Gulmarg road was restored by the authorities through a diversion that did not pass through the Narbal village, where 17-year-old Suhail Ahmad Sofi was killed in police firing during clashes between security forces and stone-pelting protestors on Saturday.

The protest was staged in the village following a call for shutdown in the Valley against the arrest of separatist leader Masrat Alam.State authorities arrested a police constable and a sub-inspector for violating at Narbal on Saturday the laid down standard operating procedure for crowd control. An FIR has also been lodged at the Magam police station in the firing incident and authorities said investigations had already begun.Meanwhile, the district magistrate of Budgam has ordered a magisterial enquiry into the teenager's killing.Activists of the hardline Hurriyat group, headed by Syed Ali Geelani, staged a peaceful protest here on Sunday against the youth's killing.
