Under the World TB awareness week, a “Protect your health” workshop was organized held at Food Craft Institute(FCI) Khanayara under the aegis of District TB Centre Dharamshala.  A documentary film “Atoot Dor” was screened on the occasion which depicted, the challenges in TB Control including poverty and lack of awareness. On the occasion Chief guest Rajesh Dhiman noted social worker stated that Malnutrition makes people more susceptible to the development of active TB, and active TB contributes to the development of malnutrition. This vicious circle impacts not only on individuals but can easily transfer to their families and their communities. Good nutrition won’t definitely stop you getting tuberculosis, but it certainly gives you a better chance of fighting it successfully. If the world truly wants to see a reduction in the burden of global diseases like TB, ensuring good nutrition for all would be an excellent first step.

Sh Rajesh Sharma Principal of FCI Khanyara stated that the students need to take care of their health, as they are in the food business. Simple measures like proper nutrition can be critical. Under nutrition increases the risk of tuberculosis and in turn tuberculosis can lead to malnutrition. Pawan Mehta faculty of the institute added that Food and nutrition support breaks the vicious cycle.Dr RK Sood District TB Officer asked all to lead healthy lifestyle and avoid tobacco smoking, as tobacco is responsible for higher risk of developing TB. Smoking damages the lungs and can make smokers more susceptible to TB infection; smoking harms the body's immune system, meaning smokers are less able to combat TB infection; and smoking reduces the effectiveness of TB treatment which can lead to longer periods of infection and/or more severe forms of the disease.

Anu Thakur of front office department won the first prize for innovative poster on diabetes and TB, followed by Bindra Thakur who developed a simple poster with key messages of TB is curable, while the poster of Manish was ranked third.  A live quiz of Tuberculosis was also organized during the event in which students including Tilka Raj, Rajat, and Sunny bagged prizes. Faculty members including Sachin, Rajesh, Gurbachan also actively participated in organiszing the events.

Box- Over nutrition (obesity) and lack of physical exercise also lead to diabetes- which is a risk factor for active TB disease. Having diabetes triples the risk that a person will develop tuberculosis (TB). Healthy lifestyle is the key to prevention of diabetes, and people with diabetes should get proper treatment.
