Srinagar , 02 Mar 2015

Due to fresh snowfall and landslides and several places, the authorities closed the Srinagar- Jammu National Highway for vehicular traffic.

A senior police official told GNS that the highway was closed today morning in view of heavy snowfall between Qazigund and Banihal and landslides at Ramsu, Seri and Panthal areas. He said so far about ten inches of snow had accumulated on the ground in Qazigund and more than 1 feet around Jawahar Tunnel - the gateway to the Kashmir valley - and snowfall was still on.

The snowfall resulted in slippery conditions prompting the authorities to suspend the traffic on the road, he said, adding dozens of Jammu-bound passenger and heavy vehicles were stranded and efforts are on to clear the traffic.Meanwhile, moderate snow has been recorded in plains while higher reaches received heavy snowfall.Meanwhile, weatherman predicted more snowfall and rains in the region till March 10.“There will be intermittent rain and snow during the time”, weatherman said.
