Anti-poll protest in Palhallan:Police open fire in air after PDP cavalcade was stoned

Police on Tuesday evening resorted to aerial firing and teargas shelling after youth attack Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) cavalcade in Palhallan on Srinagar-Baramulla Highway in north Kashmir’s Baramulla.Prior to firing, dozens of youth staged an anti-election protest at Raipora locality of Palhallan.Eyewitnesses told GNS that at around 5:50 pm, dozens of youth appeared at Raipora and shouted pro-freedom, pro-Islam and anti-election slogans. “Many youths from other localities started to join them and in the meanwhile, a PDP cavalcade consisting of mini-buses and other passenger vehicles passed from the area. The youth, who were coming to join the pro-freedom protesters, attacked the cavalcade with stones resulting in damage to several vehicles,” a witness, Shabir Hussain, told GNS.

 Soon after the attack, huge number of police and paramilitary personal reached on the spot and opened several rounds of fire in air to disperse the protesters. “The police also fired dozens of tearsmoke shells near Misra Gali,” Hussain said. The clashes between police and youth continued till 7:00 pm, residents said.On Tuesday, the similar incident took place in Palhallan after which police resorted to aerial firing and teargas shelling. The Palhallan area – which falls in Pattan Assembly Segment – is going for polls on December 9 in third phase. (GNS)
