The Punjab Revenue and Public Relations Minister, Bikram Singh Majithia today exhorted the people to motivate young generations towards sports to curb the menace of drug addiction and construction of a healthy society. Majithia, who was addressing a massive gathering here during a conclusion ceremony of Chandigarh Gully Cricket organized by a media group in collaboration with Chandigarh Police, said that it was the call of the hour to bring back focus on sports and providing a platform to our youngsters motivating them towards sports, to save their future. He said that we all should start collective efforts to promote sports amongst our youth as with the advent of electronic media, state games like gulli-danda, cricket, marbles, kabaddi and street cycling have become part of the history and the youth has become addicted of television and video games. Appreciating this initiative to organize gully cricket, Majithia said that this Gully Cricket besides promoting the sports amongst our budding players also educated the people against social evils including female foeticide and drug addiction. He said that we should not forget that this gully cricket has given us players like Sachin Tendulkar, Sunil Gavaskar, Kapil Dev and Mahinder Singh Dhoni.The Minister said that importance of traditional games in Punjab was recognized by Sukhbir Singh Badal, Deputy Chief Minister, who promoted Kabaddi by organizing World Cup Kabaddi twice during last three years and now we are ready to organize free style World Wrestling Championship. He also appreciated Chandigarh police, who have recognized that the games were the best stress busters for our youth that could channelize their energy in the constructive areas. Majithia said that if we were able to popularize our state games again, we will be able to hunt hidden talent in every game besides keeping away our youth from drug addiction and crime.
