Sukhbir Singh Badal, Punjab Deputy Chief Minister, today demanded a centrally sponsored ‘Special Research Project’ for Punjab Agriculture University, Ludhiana to develop the heat resistant wheat variety, to maintain the wheat production growth of the country. Badal requested Union Agriculture Minister, Sharad Pawar to take personal interest to get this project sanctioned for PAU, Ludhiana, the University that was catalyst of Green Revolution making India self-sufficient on food security front. Badal also mentioned the Union Government communication to UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCC) that has predicted that with possible climate change of one degree rise in temperature along with increase in carbon dioxide in the atmosphere would adverse the impact production of wheat in the country unless adaptation strategy were adopted. He also pointed out that the report has also painted a grim scenario for key sector like water, agriculture, forestry and natural eco systems. Badal said that Punjab contributes more that 60% in the national kitty in a grain pool and has played a leading role in making India self sufficient on food security front. He said that PAU made sterling research during green revolution and was instrumental in this momentous national task. He said that now Union Government must take pre-emptive initiatives by sanctioning a special research project for PAU to develop heat resistant, high carbon dioxide resistant strains of wheat seeds so that Punjab was able to continue expected to contribute more than 1.20 lakh tonnes of wheat to national pool and Punjab Government was worried about projection of 6 million tonnes drop in wheat production with rise of one degree Celsius temperature. Seeking an early decision on Research Project, Badal said that this project was imperative for the whole country and Punjab was looking towards its early approval.
