The District Administration Udhampur today organised an awareness programme to mark the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, aimed at sensitising the public, particularly the youth, about the harmful effects of drug abuse and the importance of building a drug-free society.

This year's programme focussed on sharing the stories of recovered drug abuse victims, their felicitation and reintegration into the mainstream. Deputy Commissioner Udhampur Minga Sherpa attended as chief guest, while District Social Welfare Officer Kanika Gupta presided over the event.

Addressing the gathering, the Deputy Commissioner emphasised the importance of creating a safe and supportive environment for young people at home and within society, and highlighted the role of families in maintaining open communication with children to identify and prevent substance abuse early.

The DC urged the youth to actively participate in sports, cultural, recreational and other extracurricular activities to reduce stress and stay away from harmful influences. Minga Sherpa called upon citizens to act as ambassadors in the fight against drug abuse by promptly reporting incidents of drug consumption and trafficking to authorities concerned, and appealed to all present to take a firm pledge to remain drug-free and help protect others from substance abuse. The programme featured cultural performances by students and local artists.
