In a major breakthrough amidst the ongoing drive to make Punjab a safe and secure state as per directions of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, Amritsar Rural Police, in a joint operation with Central Agencies, has apprehended two individuals linked to cross-border handlers and recovered two hand grenades from their possession, said Director General of Police (DGP) Punjab Gaurav Yadav here on Tuesday.

Those arrested have been identified as Davinder Singh, a resident of village Chungh in Tarn Taran and Rajwinder Singh, a resident of Sursingh in Tarn Taran. Apart from recovering hand grenades, police teams have also impounded their sedan Hyundai Verna car, bearing registration number PB 46 AL 7846.

DGP Gaurav Yadav said that preliminary investigation has revealed that the accused were in contact with foreign-based handlers and were acting on their directions. The recovery of hand grenades points to a larger conspiracy aimed at disturbing peace and public order in the border state, he said.

The DGP said that further investigation is underway to establish forward and backward linkages in this case to identify other associates involved in the network. Sharing operational details, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Amritsar Rural Kanwalpreet Singh Chahal said that police teams had received a reliable input that suspects Davinder Singh and Rajwinder Singh had retrieved a consignment of explosive material sent by their handlers from across the border and they are hatching a conspiracy to carry out a terror activity to disturb the peace and harmony of the state.

Acting swiftly, police teams under the supervision of DSP Investigation Gurinderpal Singh Nagra and DSP Attari Yadwinder Singh launched an intelligence operation and apprehended the duo at Khasa area, he said, while adding that during search of their Verna car two hand grenades were recovered. The SSP said that preliminary investigation has suggested that both the accused waiting for the directions of their foreign-based handlers to carry out the terror activity. Further investigation is ongoing, he added.

He said that the probe has also revealed that both the accused were introduced to foreign-based handler by inmate Harwant Singh alias Harry, presently lodged in Amritsar Jail. Both the accused has smuggled many weapons and explosives to the associates of Harwant Singh, he said, while adding that police teams have recovered mobile phone of Harwant alias Harry from Amritsar Jail and separate case has been registered in this regard.
