Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday met Union Labour and Employment as well as Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya in New Delhi and discussed strengthening sports infrastructure in the state along with improving welfare measures for workers.

The meeting, held at the Union Minister's official residence, lasted for more than an hour and focussed on expanding Assam's sporting ecosystem and creating an enabling environment for workers and labourers in the state. Following the meeting, Sarma shared details on social media platform X and highlighted what he described as the Bharatiya Janata Party's guiding philosophy of 'Sewa First'.

"'Sewa First’ is a philosophy which binds every 'karyakarta' of BJP. I am thankful to Union Minister Mansukh Mandaviya who gave his time this morning, on his birthday, to discuss various matters related to developing sports infrastructure in Assam and creating an enabling atmosphere for our Shramjeevis,” the Chief Minister wrote.

According to Sarma, the discussions centred on strengthening sports infrastructure across Assam, creating better opportunities for athletes and ensuring enhanced welfare mechanisms for workers. The Chief Minister also conveyed birthday wishes to Mandaviya and sought continued support from the Centre for Assam’s efforts to emerge as a major sporting destination in the country.

“I wished him the very best on this special day and requested him to continue his support in our endeavour to build Assam as a Sports Hub of India,” Sarma added. The meeting assumes significance as the Assam government has been making sustained investments in sports infrastructure and hosting several national and international sporting events in recent years.

The state administration has been focussing on developing modern sporting facilities, nurturing young talent and strengthening grassroots sports development as part of its broader vision to position Assam as a leading sports destination in the Northeast and across the country.

The government has repeatedly asserted that sports development and youth engagement would remain key pillars of Assam’s long-term growth and development agenda.
