Governor of Punjab and Administrator, U.T. Chandigarh, Gulab Chand Kataria attended a programme organised at the Government Museum and Art Gallery, Chandigarh as the Chief Guest on the occasion of International Museum Day.
Also present on the occasion were Chief Secretary H. Rajesh Prasad, Secretary Tourism Dr. Syed Abid Rasheed Shah, Director Tourism Shri Naveen and Director Museum Ms. Isha Kamboj. Speaking on this year’s theme, “Museums Uniting a Divided World,” the Administrator said museums help people understand the country’s history, culture and traditions while promoting mutual respect and understanding.
He said museums are not just places where old objects are kept, but spaces that connect people with their heritage and inspire future generations. He also spoke about the historical importance of the Government Museum and Art Gallery, Chandigarh, where many valuable artefacts brought to India after Partition are preserved.
He added that India is also working to bring back valuable parts of the country’s heritage from different nations. The Administrator highlighted the efforts of the Government of India to modernise museums and preserve heritage through digital platforms such as the “Museums of India” portal and JATAN software.
On the occasion, the Administrator released a pictorial brochure titled “Pierre Jeanneret Museum Chandigarh” dedicated to International Museum Day 2026. The brochure was prepared under the patronage of the Governor and compiled by Harpreet Sandhu.
The Administrator also visited the “Chandigarh @75 - Down the Memory Lane” exhibition organised by the Chandigarh Lalit Kala Akademi, showcasing vintage photographs depicting the city’s early development and post-Partition journey, along with the collectible exhibition at the museum.
The Administrator felicitated the winners of the painting competition and appreciated the participation of students, artists, and cultural organisations. He also encouraged schools and colleges to organise regular museum visits to promote awareness of India’s rich heritage and culture.
