Residents and plot holders of Sectors 76 to 80, SAS Nagar, have welcomed the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority’s (GMADA) decision to reduce enhancement charges from Rs 3164 to Rs 2325 per square meter, providing direct relief of Rs 839 per square meter to nearly 10,000 plot holders. They expressed heartfelt gratitude to MLA Kulwant Singh for his dedicated and persistent efforts in securing this reduction.

The long-awaited relief is the result of MLA Kulwant Singh’s continuous follow-up with GMADA for nearly four years. Expressing their gratitude, members of the Anti-Enhancement Committee and representatives of the affected sectors met the MLA today and later addressed a joint press conference to share the development.

Addressing mediapersons, MLA Kulwant Singh recalled that the enhancement amount, initially fixed between Rs 700 and Rs 850 per square meter in 2013, had escalated to Rs 3164 per square meter due to delays by previous governments. “Instead of resolving the issue in time, successive governments kept deferring it for political reasons, which unfairly burdened the plot holders,” he said.

He added that GMADA’s issuance of demand notices at such inflated rates had triggered strong resentment among residents, who rightly questioned the delay in recovery. To collectively take up the issue, residents had formed an Anti-Enhancement Committee, which later approached him for intervention.

“Since GMADA was legally bound to pay enhanced compensation to landowners as per Hon’ble Supreme Court directions, a complete waiver was not feasible. However, I had assured residents that I would ensure the burden was significantly reduced — and I’m pleased that promise stands fulfilled today,” said the MLA.

He further informed that if any allottee has already deposited the enhancement amount at the previous higher rate, the excess payment will be refunded. Fresh demand notices with revised rates will be issued shortly.

Prominent among those present from the Anti-Enhancement Committee included Sukhdev Singh Patwari (Convener, Sectors 76–80), Rajeev Vashisht, Jarnail Singh, Charanjit Kaur Deol, Major Singh, Sukhchain Singh, and several other residents from these sectors. Residents and committee members jointly thanked MLA Kulwant Singh for his steadfast efforts and committed pursuit of the issue, which has finally brought long-awaited relief to thousands of families.
