The 79th Independence Day celebrations at Lovely Professional University (LPU) began with a stirring patriotic orchestra that swept across the campus in a wave of patriotism and unity. As Dr. Ashok Kumar Mittal, Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha) and Founder Chancellor of LPU, alongside presiding officer Col. Dr. Rashmi Mittal, Pro-Chancellor of LPU, hoisted the tricolour, “VandeMataram” resounded through the grounds igniting profound sentiments of sacrifice and sovereignty among thousands of senior delegates, faculty, staff and students in attendance.

Addressing the gathering under the ethos of “India First,” Dr. Ashok Kumar Mittal made a bold declaration stating, LPU would boycott American soft drinks on campus if the recently imposed 50% US tariffs on Indian exports are not rolled back by August 27. Calling the hike “unfair and detrimental to India’s economic sovereignty,” Dr. Mittal asserted, “India’s youth will not bow to external pressure.

If anyone undermines our nation’s economic or overall progress, we will respond with firmness and unity because today’s India is powerful.” The announcement drew thunderous applause as the entire university pledged their support, echoing the belief that national integrity must be upheld with courage and conviction.

Upholding its legacy of holistic excellence, LPU honoured about 200 outstanding sports persons, celebrating their national and international triumphs with ₹80 lakh in rewards. In a proud display of discipline and leadership, NCC cadets were conferred with distinguished ranks, reflecting the university’s commitment to nurturing future guardians of the nation.

With heads bowed in reverence, the gathering offered a solemn salute to the valiant soldiers of the Indian Armed Forces, whose steadfast sacrifice continues to safeguard the very sovereignty that Independence embodies. As the day unfolded, the campus transformed into a vibrant canvas of cultural splendour, with traditional music, dance and artistic performances showcasing India’s rich heritage.

The festivities concluded with a collective pledge to uphold integrity, innovation and patriotism in every endeavour, continuing LPU’s mission of nurturing not just world-class achievers, but responsible citizens dedicated to building a stronger, self-reliant India.
