Punjab To Give Big Push To Non-Conventional Energy: Majithia

The Punjab is all set to give a big push to Non-Conventional Energy with an aim to generate 10% of total generated power from such resources.Presiding over a meeting to review the working of Non Conventional Energy Department,  Bikram Singh Majithia, Minister for Non Conventional Energy said that Punjab is determined to speed-up non-conventional energy projects including biomass, solar, mini-hydel and due to unstinted efforts during last five years, Punjab was generating 503 MW power. He asked Secretary Non Conventional Energy, Mr. Karan Avtar Singh to issue specific instructions to all departments to ensure that all schools, colleges, bus stands, hospitals, district administrative complex should compulsorily run on solar power on the pattern of Gujarat state. He said that state government would provide 30% subsidy for installing solar power plants for such buildings. Mr. Majithia said that Punjab has already declared Amritsar, Ludhiana and Ajitgarh districts as solar cities and Rs 9 crore has already been released for each city.The Minister asked the department to issue instructions to Punjab State Power Corporation Limited to ensure that all new 75000 tube well connections were made to install four star electric motors besides CFL lamps that would save more than 30% energy. It was also decided that Punjab Bhawan, Chandigarh, MLAs Hostel, Ministers Houses would have ‘Solar Water Heating’ system.Stressing for giving a big push to Biomass power plants, Mr. Majithia said that such plants constructed during last five years have come as a blessing in disguise for the farmers, who were getting good price for their agricultural waste. He issued instructions to complete construction of 30 more such plants in next two years. Besides Secretary Renewable Energy  Karan Avtar Singh, Senior officers of Punjab Energy Development Agency were also present in the meeting.
