Every year, millions of Jains in India and worldwide gather to celebrate Mahavir Jayanti, the birth anniversary of Lord Mahavira, the 24th and last Tirthankara of Jainism. In 2025, this auspicious day falls on April 10, and it is celebrated with peaceful rituals, vibrant processions, and heartfelt reflections on his timeless teachings. This article tells you everything you need to know about the history, significance, and celebration of this festival.

When is Mahavir Jayanti 2025?

According to the Hindu lunar calendar, Mahavir Jayanti in 2025 will be celebrated on Thursday, April 10. Trayodashi Tithi will begin on the 13th lunar day at 10:55 pm on April 9 and end at 1:00 am on April 11. States like Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Delhi will declare a public holiday, with banks, schools and government offices to remain closed.

The Life of Lord Mahavir

Born in 599 BC in Kundalagram in modern-day Bihar, Lord Mahavira was named Vardhamana by his parents, King Siddhartha and Queen Trishala. According to legend, Queen Trishala had 14 auspicious dreams before his birth, which predicted his spiritual greatness.

At the age of 30, Vardhamana renounced his princely pleasures to seek enlightenment. For 12.5 years, he meditated, practising non-violence and detachment under extremely difficult conditions. At the age of 42, he attained Kevala Jnana and spent the next 30 years teaching the path to salvation. He attained salvation at the age of 72 in Pavapuri, Bihar.

Why Do We Celebrate Mahavir Jayanti?

Mahavir Jayanti is not just a ritual, it is a reminder to live according to non-violence, truth and non-possession. The teachings of Lord Mahavira are still very relevant today, such as "Every soul is independent; no one is dependent on another," which emphasizes self-reliance and inner strength.

"Non-violence is the greatest religion" advocates compassion towards all living beings, from humans to micro-organisms. Jains believe that following these principles purifies the soul and breaks the cycle of rebirth.

How is Mahavir Jayanti Celebrated?

1. The Grand Rath Yatra

In cities like Ahmedabad and Jaipur, devotees place decorated statues of Lord Mahavira on chariots and sing hymns like the Bhaktamar Stotra. This procession symbolizes Mahavira's journey to spread knowledge.

2. Temple Rituals

At dawn the idols are bathed with milk, honey and flowers (abhishek). Monks recite verses from the Kalpa Sutra describing the life of Mahavira. Many Jains fast for 24 hours and drink only boiled water after sunset.

3. Acts of Charity

Devotees donate food, clothes and money to animal shelters. In 2025, eco-friendly initiatives like tree planting and plastic-free events will gain prominence.

4. Family Gatherings

Families prepare satvik food and share stories of Mahavira's compassion. Children dress up as sadhus and participate in essay competitions on Jain principles.

Lord Mahavir’s Teachings in Modern Life

Jains live sustainably by minimizing waste and avoiding root vegetables to prevent damage from insects. Ahimsa inspires nonviolent communication in workplaces and schools. "Keep less, live more" fits with today's minimalist trends.

Mahavir Jayanti Across India

Temples in Palitana organize night-long bhajans. Free medical camps are held at the Dhundhoraji temple in Jaipur. Community kitchens in Chennai serve over 30,000 meals to the underprivileged.

Author's opinion

Mahavir Jayanti is not just about rituals, it is a call to slow down and ask, “Am I living with kindness?” Whether you are Jain or not, his message of inner peace through non-violence is universal. This April, light a diya, help a stranger, or simply sit in silence. As Lord Mahavira said, “Respect for all living beings is the foundation of a truly moral society.”
