The Department of Biotechnology, Chandigarh College of Technology (CCT) and Chandigarh College of Hospitality, CGC Landran, organised a series of events to raise awareness about cancer, its early detection and prevention, as part of the global observance of World Cancer Day. 

This year to mark World Cancer Day under the theme “United by Unique”- the Department of Biotechnology, collaborated with Livasa Hospital and Fortis Hospital, Mohali. Chandigarh College of Hospitality on the other hand, organised free diet consultations, focused on healthy recipes and functional foods instrumental in cancer prevention.  

The awareness initiatives featured a range of awareness-driven activities, expert sessions and interactive engagements aimed at educating students and faculty about cancer prevention, detection and treatment. 

The event organised by department of Biotechnology, CCT, CGC Landran was graced by the presence of chief guest Prof. Budhi Singh Yadav, Department of Radiology and Oncology, PGIMER, Chandigarh. 

Post a welcome address by Dr. Palki Sahib Kaur, Director-Principal, CCT, CGC Landran, Prof. Yadav, delivered the keynote address providing valuable insights into breast cancer, expertly guiding students on the importance of self-assessment and early detection in the fight against this disease.

Dr. Meenakshi Sharma, Consultant in Radiation Oncology at Livasa Hospital, Mohali, led an engaging session, where emphasized the importance of a healthy lifestyle, exercise, and regular medical check-ups for early detection, along with maintaining a balanced diet and avoiding tobacco and alcohol. 

Dr. Vibha Goel, Consultant Psychiatrist, Livasa Hospital, Mohali, discussed the psychological impact of cancer and the resilience of patients undergoing treatment. A deeply inspiring moment was the special talk by Dr. Supriya Agnihotri, HOD, CCP, CGC Landran, who shared her personal battle with cancer, highlighting the journey from a fighter to a survivor.

Beyond technical sessions, the awareness event featured community-driven initiatives such as a Cancer Awareness Rally, featuring over 200 students and faculty members. Additionally, a special medical health check-up camp was organized in collaboration with Fortis Hospital, Mohali, providing free health check-ups and consultation. 

To encourage participation and awareness, different non- technical events including quiz competition, poster-making contest and a declamation competition were organized for students. These activities provided a platform for students to showcase their knowledge, creativity and communication skills while emphasizing key messages about cancer awareness.
