The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) has sought the immediate deployment of sniffer dogs at the Sri Vijayapuram airport and nearby jetties to tackle the growing problem of drug smuggling. The program, which follows growing concerns about drug-related crimes, is aimed at improving security standards and stopping the smuggling of illegal drugs in the region.

The Current Situation

According to an October 13, 2024, report from Sri Vijayapuram, the problem of drug smuggling in and around the airport is growing. The lack of trained sniffer dogs has made it more challenging for CISF troops to successfully detect drugs despite existing security measures. The organization, which is responsible for ensuring that airports and industrial sites are safe, understands the importance of dogs in detecting hidden substances.

The Role of Sniffer Dogs

Sniffer dogs have proven extremely useful in security operations around the world. Because of their exceptional sense of smell, they can detect even small quantities of narcotics on people, in baggage, or in cargo. The presence of sniffer dogs greatly improves the ability of security forces to prevent drug smuggling in high-traffic locations such as airports, where there is a high volume of people and products.

Benefits of Deployment

Deploying sniffer dogs at Sri Vijaya Puram Airport would affect several benefits:

   - Enhanced Detection: Canine units can quickly and accurately locate drugs, which might elude conventional scanning methods.

   - Deterrence: The knowledge that sniffer dogs are present can discourage potential traffickers from attempting to smuggle drugs through the airport.

   - Increased Security: A comprehensive security strategy that includes sniffer dogs will create a safer environment for passengers and staff alike.

Previous Initiatives

CISF has taken initiatives to improve security protocols in several places. They have also recently worked on environmental projects and clean-up drives in collaboration with the Airports Authority of India (AAI). On the other hand, targeted initiatives like the deployment of specialist dog teams are necessary to deal with the multiple threats posed by drug smuggling.
