23 Feb 2024

In February 2021, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) made it mandatory for all four-wheelers to have an active FASTag for automatic toll payments on national highways. This move was aimed at promoting digital payments and easing congestion and waiting times at toll plazas. Currently, the FASTag system is available at 1000+ toll plazas across India, offering a hassle-free travel experience to commuters.

Vehicles without a functional FASTag must pay double the charges at the toll plaza as a penalty. This new rule has made it imperative for all four-wheeled vehicle owners to obtain a FASTag. Fortunately, purchasing a FASTag is a simple and hassle-free process that can be quickly done online.

In this article, we will walk you through an instant FASTag application process so you can enjoy the convenience of cashless toll payments and avoid paying penalties.

What is a FASTag?

A FASTag is a small sticker affixed on the vehicle's windscreen. It uses Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) technology to make instant automatic payments at toll booths. The applicable toll amount is deducted from the linked bank account or prepaid wallet associated with the FASTag

Benefits of Using a FASTag

There are several advantages of using a FASTag for toll tax payment.

·     Saves time and fuel: With a FASTag on your vehicle's windscreen, you can easily pass through toll booths, avoiding long queues. This saves time and reduces fuel wasted while waiting in long lines.

·     Recharge anytime: Recharge your tag anytime, 24/7, using debit cards, credit cards, net banking, BBPS, or UPI.

·    Maintain transaction record: You receive instant SMS notifications on your registered mobile number for toll transactions made on your FASTag account. This helps you to track your FASTag balance and record.

·    Cashless transactions: With FASTag, you can drive through toll plazas without worrying about carrying the exact change and cash at toll plazas.

·     Environmental benefits: With a completely digital process, FASTag helps save paper. Moreover, as vehicles pass through tolls quickly, this helps lower fuel consumption and contributes to reduced air pollution.

·     Social Benefits: It streamlines highway management by minimising cash handling, and human involvement at toll plazas.

How to Buy a FASTag Online

Indian Highway Management Company Limited (IHMCL), a company promoted by NHAI, has been mandated to implement the FASTag programme in India. At present, it has certified  several banks for FASTag issuance. Here is how you can buy a FASTag online:

Step 1: Visit the official website of your preferred bank -

Navigate to the FASTag section on IndusInd website

Click on the “Apply  Now” button on the page.

Step 2: Fill in the Required Details -

Enter your vehicle type and all other relevant details.

Upload a copy of Registration Certificate (RC) of your vehicle.

Step 3: Make the Payment -

Confirm your vehicle type to know the tag issuance fee, and the applicable refundable security deposit.

Pay the required amount through your preferred online payment mode.

Once your payment is approved, the FASTag will be delivered to your registered address. You can then activate it and link it to your prepaid account for seamless toll payments.

Alternatively, you can visit the bank's nearest branch to apply for a  FASTag offline.

What Are the Documents Required to Buy a FASTag Online?

The applicant must submit the following documents:

Registration certification (RC) of the vehicle

KYC documents include address and ID proof, such as a driving license, , passport, voter ID card, and Aadhaar Card.

However, it is important to note that KYC document requirements differ based on the category of the vehicle owner. For instance, document requirements will differ for corporates and proprietorships.

The Bottom Line
